The Impact of Nonprofits in this Country

  • There are close to 2 million nonprofit organizations that are registered with the IRS. There are many more that operate without an official designation.

  • The number of nonprofit organizations is growing at a rate of approximately 90,000 per year.

  • Nonprofit organizations had total revenues of $900 billion and assets exceeding $2 trillion in 2002. These rates exploded with the long run enjoyed in the recent past by the stock market and general acceptance of fees for services.

  • People donated over $240 billion in 2002. This represents a $50 billion increase since 1999 – despite the major economic downturn seen during that three-year period.

  • Seventy percent of all households in America contribute financially to nonprofits.

  • If the nonprofits in this country made up a country onto itself, its revenues would exceed those generated by the gross domestic products of most of the countries in the world, including first-world countries such as Canada and Australia.*

  • The number of Americans working in the nonprofit sector has doubled in the last 25 years.  Today, 12.5 million people work for nonprofits in this country. It is a number larger than the number of people who work in construction, transportation, finance, insurance, or real estate.*

  • Approximately 84 million adults in America volunteer annually.

  • Nonprofits are governed by boards of directors that range in size from three to over 100, with the average board size being 17.

  • At last count (2001) there were 245 colleges and universities offering courses in nonprofit management, including almost 100 that offer 3 or more graduate courses in the field. Among the institutions offering degree programs are Harvard and Yale. The number of institutions is growing daily.
