The Impact of Nonprofits in this Country
- There
are close to 2 million nonprofit organizations in this country
that are registered with the IRS. There are many more that operate
without an official designation.
-
The number of nonprofit organizations grows at a rate of approximately
40,000 per year.
-
Nonprofit organizations had total revenues of $670 billion in
1996. That rate exploded these last few years with the long
run enjoyed by the stock market and general acceptance of fees
for services. It remains on the upswing despite the economic
downturn.
-
People donated $190.16 billion in 1999. Since 1997 the giving
rate has increased more than $15 billion annually.
-
Revenues from nonprofit organizations grew a third faster than
the US economy between 1977 and 1996.
-
Seventy percent of all households in America contribute financially
to nonprofits.
-
If the nonprofits in this country made up a country onto itself,
its revenues would exceed those generated by the gross domestic
products of most of the countries in the world, including first-world
countries such as Canada and Australia.*
-
More than 11 million people work for nonprofits in this country.
It is a number larger than the number of people who work in
construction, transportation, finance, insurance, or real estate.*
-
More than 56% of adults in America volunteer annually.
-
Nonprofits are governed by boards of directors that range in
size from three to over 100, with the average board size being
17.
-
There are 245 colleges and universities offering courses in
nonprofit management, including almost 100 that offer 3 or more
graduate courses in the field. Among the institutions offering
degree programs are Harvard and Yale. The number of institutions
is growing daily.
